Help!

As we finish up our first term back at a school institution, I find myself reflecting 0n the past 3 months.
It has been good. The boys have been able to compete in many swimming events and WizzKid just missed being the Victor Ladorum(in swimming) by 1 point. He got to compete in a major gala and won 1 Gold, 2 Silvers and a Bronze. CoolDude made it into the Junior Tennis Squad and did his first oral(in front of 25 other kids), and got 85%. (I was so proud of him!)
Both have made new friends and are very happy! BUT........................

My concern is that they do very little work at school! The standard is much lower than home-education. The maths they are doing now, they did 2 years ago!!!!! CoolDude keeps reminding his Class teacher ...... "I did this along time ago Mrs Perks!"(.....oops.)

WizzKid is going to grade 8(High School) next year and we are not sure what to do. He loves his swimming and is so good at it. His goal is the Olympics!!! But we don't want to compromise his education. And of course there's the other issue of leaving this country that is a big influence!...... urgh!

Any suggestions? What has/what is working for you?
I'd love to hear your suggestions and advice.

How frustrating! I would make an appointment to speak to the teacher and bring along some of the work that was done while homeschooling. After you've shown the school that he has indeed done all the work, it might be possible for him to work on the maths level he's at. It's worth a try.

Kathleen..... unfortunately we are doing a major catch up in our country. What I mean by that is we have so many disadvantaged people(those who suffered under the past government, and apparently still do (?))... that the standard has dropped considerably.
We are in a shocking state! It's very sad

I believe that the private schools are not interested in our motives and well being,...... it's all about whether the school fees(and boy do we pay through our noses..... R6000/month($750)) can be paid and whether your child is really and asset to the school!

Another urghhhhhhhh!

If talking to the teachers won't help any, can he compete in school (or town??? here we have town affiliated sports as well) while being homeschooled? Perhaps finding groups (if you can) to get involved with would help.... That way he gets the higher education with the sports availability??

HI Fee,
I was gonna ask the same question as Mrs. Guthrie. Sometimes homeschoolers are allowed to participate in school sport programs.

Dittos on the last two comments. That is a REALLY tough call for you. And sometimes it's hard to know what God is leading you to do. Our school system really works well with H.S.ers and allow them to participate in band and sports etcetera but I know it's probably so different there. Not an easy answer. We'll stay tuned! :}

Hmmm, how do your boys feel about it? Are they getting bored? Is there no way that they can do higher work in their subjects? Or like the other commentors, can you homeschool and still have them involved in their sports?

That's a hard one. How long is there school day? Can you work with them some after school and do the advanced stuff?

They finish school at 2:00 and then do sport most afternoons. Jamie finishes his swimming at 6:30 on Mon-Thurs!!!! Then the homework begins........

Thanks to those of you who gave suggestions. We came to a decision this morning, after much phoning around to various schools and friends, that WizzKid will be homeschooled and in the afternoon be apart of a good schools sporting events!!! We are very happy!
