This riles me so !

I try not to use my blog as a rant-and-rave pedestal, but today I will!

To put you in the picture ........
MrGee and I keep a very close monitor on what our boys read and watch. We have security(Bit Defender)on all our computers.Even with this precaution the boys are not allowed to browse the internet without one of us present, and they do not have TV's or computers in their rooms.

We are a little more lenient when it comes to a movie that contains violence. What I mean by this, is that if the movie is age restricted PG13 and it's only for violence(eg '10000 BC' or The Fugitive), then we will allow our 13 and 10 year old boys to watch it. We do not do sitcoms with homosexu@l characters, or any TV program/movie that promotes pre-marit@l sex, infidelity or g@y relationships.
With regards to reading we allow most fantasy books (eg Eragon, the Narnia series and Lord of the Rings) but we do not allow the reading of any of the Harry Potter books which portray evil as good!

Having said all that,....... I am still finding it extremely hard to protect my kids' minds and preserve their innocence.
Two months ago MrGee bought the boys and I cell phone contracts. Since then CoolDude and I have been sent revolting messages encouraging us to visit some horrific websites.
Today WizzKid popped the latest PC Format Magazine in the trolley .... as I unpacked the grocery bags, I came across this .......

Blinken heck (yes, I'm peeved) ..... Wizkid loves this mag for it's info on computer issues, new gadgets, and latest games. (And that's ALL I want him to love it for!) Then I look inside ...... my anger boils as I rip 4 more pages of semi n@ked girls from within!
I'm aware that my children will see stuff they shouldn't see but I do believe, that as parents, we are to try and prevent this from happening for as L-O-N-G as possible.

Besides going to live on a remote island ........ what more can parents do to protect our children? ........... or am I just being over the top?

xx

You are NOT over the top!! Oh my goodness! S*x sells, does it not? Living in a resort community, it is all over the place, and we try to protect our kids from it, too. It's so hard! I commend you for taking proactive action on your kids' behalf. Keep it up! (because you know the media industry will too :( )

I know what your mean. We were looking through the Target advertisement and there are half naked women advertising under clothes.

Sorry about your cat having to find another home. Although I have to admit that I don't like cats going on my lawn.

Blessings,

I totally agree with you. It is not that we are completely prudish or even excessively protective, we just want our childern to remain children while they are children. My husband is so angry with the Miss USA pagent fiasco he is determined to turn off all media to our home. If you haven't seen this story google. It will make your blood boil.

that is ridiculous!
I would probably write a letter to the president of that company and explain how bothered you are by this. And, to the cell phone companies. It's terrible how many images our children have to see like that in their lifetime.

I think it's horrible too. They are numbing our society to all of this sex, drugs, and violence. All of this garbage has increased 100 fold compared to when I was a child. It's pretty scary and discouraging. It brings to mind a situation at our grocery store...I will have to make a post on it soon....*ya got me to thinking!*

I agree with you also. Sad to say, but so many people just don't have any morals anymore. Especially the media. I'm so glad that there are a few of us parents who still care. Stay Strong!!

i do not think you are over the top at all and I totally agree with you. David had a talk with one of the managers at Wal-Mart about some of the magazines theyt put out....at eye level of children! They did nothing about it said they would contact someone in the office, we have not heard from them, and doubt that we do.

You are SO wise, my friend! Keep all that trash from your precious children's eyes as long as you are able to!!! We do the exact same thin with our children. They do have TV's in their rooms, but ONLY for watching pre-approved DVD's...the TV doesn't get any channels. Our son does get a NASCAR magazine, but I tell you this, the minute there's any sort of trash in this particular magazine, I'll discontinue his subscription. It's not only in the media either, it's all around us. Billboards, stores, and more. I find it sickening that stores practically force you to see all that trash, especially at the check out counter. We have a couple stores that have 'kids only' check outs - no magazines/candy, but honestly it doesn't make one bit of difference. You have to walk past the 20 other aisles to reach it. Just keep praying for them and guard their eyes and hearts as long as possible. Teach them what's right and acceptable and tell them to avoid the rest! =) You're doing a fantastic job Mom! Keep it up.

You are NOT over the top!!! I agree with everything that you said. I have girls and I worry over and over that they will have a confused idea of what beauty is. Also what kind of an attitude and "look" is appealing. We also do not allow our children to have part with Harry Potter. I want my children to be allowed to stay children for as long as they can. Growing up comes soon enough and then you are grown up for the rest of your life. And it is good to learn principles and deep foundations on good and bad when you are young.

It is hard. It is everywhere out there now. Images, language, and everything is portrayed as normal.
Glad to see I am not the only one trying to keep mine kids for as long as possible too.
