To pack? or not to pack?...that is the question.

Wow............... it is expensive to move house when the new home is not around the corner!!!! In the past 9 years, we have moved 7 times. We have remained in one suburb so all the past moves have been quick and cheap!
I got 2 companies in to quote, and have been surprised at their costings!!!! Their quotes are a lot higher than I expected. Also, if we pack, the insurance is not comprehensive, so we are leaning towards them doing the whole packing. This is a first for me, and I don't feel so happy about strangers packing my underwear and other personal items.
Hmmmmmmmmm!
Girlfriends...... any advice? Have any of you moved lately?

We packed ourselves when we went from NY to MS and then from MS back to NY. My brother and sister-in-law are in the Navy so the Navy comes and packs them and does everything. My sister-in-law stands BY THEIR SIDES, clipboard in hand, makes lists and supervises everything beautifully.

To keep costs down, we hired local companies on each end to pack a rented truck that we drove ourselves. Check with your homeowner's insurace agent to see if there is coverage for your items in transit.
Good luck!

Hello...my two cents worth...I would say pack your "unmentionables" in a "carry-on" type suitcase that you bring with you and let the movers pack the rest. Let it be done and over with, there's a reason it's costly--it's probably worth it! It's a 6 hour drive too...! It's not like going across town. Don't stress yourself over it. Pray for protection of your items and just try to make it through the stress of the move!

No advice from me, but I will certainly pray that God will give you wisdom in your decision. We have lived in the same house for 11 years. I can't imagine moving that many times. Yuck, no thank you! I hope you like your new home!

Blessings,
Lori

Hi Fi - Did you get the email I sent you about the Community Blogger Award?

When my hubby worked for the bank they insisted on having removal people in to pack us and move us - without a doubt it was the best move I ever had and we have moved A LOT! I would strongly recommend doing it that way. You can always pack your really personal things yourself into suitcases, that's what I did.

We have moved a lot too. (7 times in 13 years)(same amount of moves just more years) The first few were close too, but the last two were several hours apart. We have always packed ourself. Also we rent a truck and do it ourselves. We enlist friends in packing our truck. Then when we arrive at a new place we have always had church members help. We checked into movers last time, because we had more kids and stuff. The church pays for us to move, but it was too expensive.(hubby is a pastor) They would pay it all, but it was ridiculously priced. We did not want to have them pay for a overpriced move. However there was a big differance if we packed ourself and had movers come in and get the boxes. More inexpensive option if you don't want to do it all yourself. We have always done it ourself. Well I guess I am rambling. Just praying for you, moving is tough and lots of work. However a new adventure is just around the corner.
Be blesssed,
Chasity

Someone else packing my panties?? Hmmm.... Well, I guess.... If it'd save me money and I could get better insurance. I suppose that everyone has panties, so the movers have probably seen them before. *wink*

I am so excited for your family!! I know this will be a wonderful adventure!

Blessings, Beckie :o)

Hi Fee! I have done both: packed myself and had the movers do it. Both were a pain, one was SUPER expensive, one just plain ole expensive :) Having them pack was really nice, convinient, but we still had issues. I'm not sure if it's worth the exhorbinant cost. If you make sure you watch what they are doing and keep a watchful eye over all the proceedings, you should be good. Also, make sure the packers and the movers understand what the other is doing. We ran into problems when the packers didn't pack the way the movers wanted to move. There were issues!
